A new UK Government-backed loan scheme could make solar panels and battery storage more accessible to homeowners across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and the wider UK.
Announced on 27 October 2026, the Warm Homes Loan Scheme offers no-interest and reduced-interest loans to help households spread the upfront cost of installing energy-saving technologies, including solar PV and battery storage.
The scheme is available across the UK, including Scotland, and could provide another option for homeowners who have been considering investing in renewable energy but have been put off by the initial installation cost.
What does the Warm Homes Loan Scheme cover?
The scheme supports several home energy improvements, including solar panels, battery storage and heat pumps.
For homeowners considering solar and battery storage, the maximum supported loan amounts are:
- Solar PV: Up to £15,000
- Electrical battery storage: Up to £15,000
Loans are provided through participating lenders, with interest rates, repayment periods and eligibility depending on the individual finance product.
The scheme is designed to help households spread installation costs over time rather than having to fund the entire investment upfront.
Why consider solar panels and battery storage together?
Solar panels allow homeowners to generate electricity from daylight, potentially reducing the amount of electricity they need to purchase from the grid.
Adding battery storage can provide additional flexibility by storing surplus solar electricity for later use, including in the evening when household electricity demand may be higher.
Battery storage may also allow households to take advantage of time-of-use electricity tariffs, charging batteries when electricity prices are lower.
However, every home is different. The right combination of solar generation and battery capacity depends on factors including roof suitability, electricity consumption, household routines and future energy requirements.
Why MCS certification matters
Under the Warm Homes Loan Scheme, solar PV and battery storage installations must be carried out by MCS-certified installers.
MCS certification provides reassurance that installations meet recognised technical and consumer protection standards.
ORKA Solutions is an MCS-certified installer, providing solar PV and battery storage solutions for homeowners across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire.
Our approach starts with understanding the property, how electricity is currently used and what the homeowner wants to achieve, before recommending an appropriate system.
How can homeowners access the scheme?
The government has confirmed that an initial group of ten lenders is participating in the scheme.
Some lenders work with specific installation partners, while others allow homeowners to choose their own MCS-certified installer.
Homeowners should check the terms offered by individual lenders, including interest rates, repayment periods, total repayment costs and installer requirements.
All applications are subject to the lender's eligibility, affordability and credit checks.
