New £400 grant makes home EV charging more accessible for rural Scotland

New £400 grant makes home EV charging more accessible for rural Scotland

The Energy Saving Trust, funded by Transport Scotland, has launched a new Domestic Charge Point Grant, offering up to £400 towards the installation of a home electric vehicle (EV) charger.

Duncan Booth, Director at Orka Solutions, explains:

“This new funding is a real step forward for rural and island communities in Scotland. People in these areas often face higher costs and fewer charging options, so the additional £400 will go a long way in making EV ownership more practical.”

“Eligibility is targeted at households in Urban Rural Classification groups 5–8, and it also extends to anyone who’s received certain Energy Saving Trust loans after April 2023 – like those for used EVs, taxis or electric vans.”

“One important detail is that applicants must wait until their grant is confirmed before starting any installation work. The grant covers the installation cost only, and it must be carried out by an OZEV- and Energy Saving Trust–approved installer. That ensures quality and compliance, and ultimately protects the homeowner.”

Duncan adds:

“For potential customers, this is another positive signal that support for EV adoption isn’t just happening in cities – it’s reaching further out to rural Scotland. It helps remove a barrier, and for many households, it could be the difference between delaying the switch to EVs or moving ahead with confidence.”
